Devotees gather at ghats for Chhat Puja

The Ganga Ghat will be the most sought after location for the next few days as several North Indians in the city will celebrate Chhat Puja.
The festivities begin on Saturday as Chhat Parva will be celebrated, followed by an important offering (Sandhya Arghya) on Sunday evening. The 'Suryodaya Arghya' or the morning offering ritual will be performed on Monday.

"The Ganga Ghat will be the most preferred location for Chhat Puja in Nashik. Traditionally, people perform Chhat rituals on Ram Kund. This year, we are organizing a musical event on Sunday wherein popular singers Rajesh Mishra and Ritu Ranjan will perform on the special stage installed at the Ghat," said Rakesh Dubey, an event organizer.
Various North Indian organisations have marked locations around the Ganga Ghat for rituals. Ram Kund and other Ghats will also be packed with thousands of devotees.

"The idea behind offering the first prayer to the setting Sun is that the cycle of birth starts with death. It is seen as the most glorious form of Sun worship," said Umapati Shambhunath Ojha, founder of Ganaraj Group, an organiser of Chhath Puja celebrations in the city.
On Sunday, devotees will carry sugarcane stalks and colourful cotton garments to offer Chhathi Mata to the Sun God.

"This year, we have marked Gandhi Talab premises near Chakradhar Swami Temple as the location for the Puja. We will also organize a free health check-up camp, stationery distribution to needy students and other events," Ojha added. The group will also organise cultural events in which traditional Bhojpuri devotional songs will be performed.
